There are things in my life today that I don’t really think about anymore.
Not because they don’t matter.
Because they belong.
That’s a strange thing about change.
In the beginning, we notice it.
We decide we’re going to start something.
We make a plan.
We write it down.
We try to remember.
We forget.
We start again.
Maybe we buy supplies. Because apparently nothing says commitment quite like purchasing supplies. 😂
For a while, the new thing requires our attention simply because it is new.
Then somewhere along the way, if it sticks, something changes.
We stop thinking of it as something we’re trying to do.
It’s simply something we do.
I’ve been noticing that in my own life lately.
Beautifully Organized began as something I was building.
Now there are people there I genuinely think about during my week.
Writing isn’t just something I’d like to do someday. I’m writing.
Learning has become part of the rhythm of my days again.
Ideas get captured because I know myself well enough to know what happens if I don’t. 😂
There are projects that began as experiments and now have a place in my life.
There are relationships that once required an intentional effort to build and now simply feel like friendship.
Even some of the things that felt unfamiliar about retirement don’t feel particularly unfamiliar anymore.
At some point, this stopped feeling like the life I was adjusting to.
It started feeling like my life.
I couldn’t tell you exactly when that happened.
There wasn’t a Tuesday afternoon when I looked up and thought, Well, there it is. The new chapter has officially begun.
Life isn’t usually that tidy.
Most lasting changes seem to arrive much more quietly.
One ordinary day followed by another.
A choice repeated often enough that we stop calling it a choice.
A person we keep making time for.
Something we continue tending.
A practice we return to after getting interrupted.
An interest that keeps pulling us back.
A little piece of life that gradually puts down roots.
And then one day we look around and realize:
Oh. This belongs here now.
I like that better than the idea that we’re constantly supposed to be transforming ourselves.
There’s enough pressure in the world to become something.
More productive.
More organized.
More successful.
More disciplined.
More whatever we’re apparently supposed to be this week.
Sometimes I think we need to look in the other direction.
Not toward what we’re trying to become.
Toward what has already become part of us.
That doesn’t mean everything we’ve created needs to stay.
Life changes.
We change.
Some routines serve us for a season and then stop working.
Some interests fade.
Some relationships change.
Some systems that once worked beautifully suddenly become ridiculous because the life they were designed for no longer exists.
That’s okay too.
But there are other things we keep choosing.
Not perfectly.
Not every day.
Just consistently enough that they begin to shape the way we live.
Those are worth noticing.
Because when I think about the life I want, I’m not really imagining one enormous accomplishment at the end of it.
I’m thinking about people.
Family.
Friendships.
Work that interests me.
Things I create.
Things I learn.
Stories I preserve.
Faith.
Laughter.
Curiosity.
A home that is lived in.
Dogs underfoot.
A conversation that goes longer than planned.
And probably a planner somewhere nearby reminding me that I was supposed to be doing something else. 🤣
Maybe that’s what all these months of planning, changing plans, making room, following curiosity and deciding what deserves my attention have been pointing toward.
We don’t build a life all at once.
We live it into existence.
And eventually, some of the things we once had to intentionally make room for are simply part of the life we’re living.
Maybe that’s worth noticing before we start planning what’s next. ❤️
